"Chapters I and III-VI follow ... a course of lectures given by E. Artin in 1941 at the University of Michigan. Chapter VII is an adaptation of a joint paper of Professor Artin and Dr. George Whaples, and was arranged by Dr. Whaples. Chapter VIII was also prepared by Dr. Whaples and is based on lectures of Professor Artin at Indiana University. Chapters II and IX include material discussed in a seminar which ran concurrently with the 1941 lectures." .
